Cisco OEM’s Great Bay Software’s Beacon

Industry News

I am not sure how I missed this before but Cisco has entered into an agreement to OEM Great Bay Software’s Beacon product. Under the Cisco label this will be known as the Cisco NAC Profiler. Their appliance does a great job of idnetifying all endpoints that are not EAP enabled, i.e. those that cant do 802.1x. This is obviously a big concern when you are thinking about turning on port based authentication. If the device can’t authenticate via 802.1x then it will get dumped into an un-auth VLAN (if the switch supports it). It would suck to find out after the fact that there were unknown devices (like printers or VOIP phones) that were quarantined by the system.

Great Bay is a local NH company, about 8 miles from me. This is the second local NH company to do well with Cisco recently, the first was Meetinghouse Data Communications.

Congrats to Steve and company!
