WoW adds 2 factor authentication

Security

World of Warcraft creator Blizzard Entertainment is selling hardware security devices. These small devices can fit on a key ring and provide a second form factor for authentication using something similar to a one time pad. The cost…..6 EUR. Robert over at Errata Security has a pretty good write up on it.

Now if only my bank could figure this out. Wait a minute….don’t they have to under PCI?? :)

The reason most banks don’t jump on two-factor “token” is because it would be a support nightmare..not to mention the backend cost (even if the customer has to pay for the token). Most banks have a cookie, visual two-factor, or “object” (like flash) downloaded to the client computer that links the computer to the customer. This “just satisfies” any regulatory requirement. Until the government regulators mandate hardware tokens most banks won’t put this in. Wish they did though! :-)

Well, I think this is a very good idea. I will sleep better if my account is secured.
