BBC’s Honeypot experiment

Security

BBC setup a Windows XP Pro Virtual Machine on the Internet to see how it would be attacked. After 7 hours of being attacked here is what happened:

36 warnings that pop-up via Windows Messenger
11 separate visits by Blaster worm
3 separate attacks by Slammer worm
1 attack aimed at Microsoft IIS Server
2-3 “port scans” seeking weak spots in Windows software

You can find the BBC story here. The reason I posted this was that I came across it on a Slashdot post. The posts on Slashdot regarding this are priceless. It’s amazing what technically savvy people take for granted. They don’t realize that probably 75% of the Windows users do not have a good grasp on security and best practices. Make for a fun read though.
